There are seven branches within the division:
- Cyber Branch oversees programs designed to support the investigation of crimes that occur on, or are facilitated by, the Internet; and develops the computer forensic capabilities of ICE. Read more
- Undercover Operations Branch provides support and oversight for undercover operations and activities conducted by ICE field offices.
- Investigative Support Branch is responsible for the support of investigative activities conducted by ICE. These functions include services in technical operations, confidential sources, POI/POE, witness protection, threats and assaults, fugitives, use of prisoners, S-Visas, Title IIIs, significant public benefit paroles and polygraph.
- Special Operations provides support to ICE field offices with analysis of telecommunications.
- Asset Forfeiture Branch oversees programs to ensure the consistent and strategic use of the asset forfeiture laws by ICE. This group also processes all joint operations reimbursement and equitable sharing requests.
The Office of Investigations has two major initiatives with law enforcement:
- Law Enforcement Support Center (LESC) serves as a national enforcement operations coordinating center by providing timely immigration status and identity information to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies on aliens suspected, arrested or convicted of criminal activity. The LESC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, assisting law enforcement agencies with information gathered from eight service databases, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the Interstate Identification Index (III) and other state criminal history indices. - Forensic Document Laboratory provides forensic support to local, state and federal law enforcement in matters relating to documents, fingerprints and other evidence.

Form M-396, "A Guide to Selected U.S. Travel and Identity Documents", is a booklet intended to assist law enforcement personnel to identify the various documents associated with travel, employment and identity. The booklet has recently been updated to include documents introduced by the Department of Homeland Security.
