Educational Advisers Go Hi-Tech

A group of State Department-affiliated EducationUSA Advisers launched a free, multilingual “virtual consulting” service to respond to the questions of prospective students and their parents about studying in the United States.

The website, entitled the EducationUSA Virtual Consulting Office (VCO), and located on the Internet at vco-edusa.net, includes general information on higher education in the United States, an online question and answer service and a discussion forum. The service is available in Arabic, Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish.

The VCO is is a new tool for the network of 600 EducationUSA Advisers at 450 centers in 170 countries.

The Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Education Information and Resources Branch Chief, Mary Thompson-Jones, whose office supports the EducationUSA network and provided funding to launch the VCO project, indicated that the site is not a substitute for individual advising, but rather a means of answering general questions in a great many students’ native languages.

“This is an effort on our part to be sensitive to how study abroad decisions are made in other cultures,” stated Thompson-Jones. Questions on financial aid and scholarships, how to apply for a student visa or to how to go about selecting the “right school” are a sampling of the many inquiries qualified EducationUSA advisers, who monitor and update the site, are prepared to answer.
