BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR SCHOOLS

Spring enrollment has ended for many schools. As you are reviewing student records, the School Certification Branch (SCB) advises approved schools to take the time and:

  • Update your institution’s contact information. Review your address, P/DSO roster, telephone numbers and email addresses and update your I-17 with current and correct information.

  • Review your advertising plan. Is it in line with 8CFR 214.3(j) that restricts approved schools to the following statement: “This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students?”

Some schools have received calls or letters from SEVP advising them that their advertising was beyond the scope of the regulations. While no school has had its certification withdrawn solely because of this issue, it is something that SEVP will continue to consider, particularly during recertification.

The SCB has created the following I-17 update job aid to assist you with reporting changes and updating the I-17. While the update is made in SEVIS, schools must send a cover letter with the required documentation to SEVP to initiate adjudication of the update.
