Reminder to SEVIS certified schools: Make required updates to all Initial and Active F-1 and M-1 student records in order to verify that students are maintaining their status and to avoid inadvertent cancellation, completion, or termination of student records.
Pursuant to the rules governing reporting on nonimmigrant students, a designated school official (P/DSO) from your institution is required to update each Initial and Active SEVIS F-1 and/or M-1 student record to indicate that the student has initially enrolled, verify enrollment each subsequent term or session throughout the course of the student's program, and update any other information required by the system. You should be aware that SEVIS will automatically change the status of F-1 and M-1 student records from "Initial" or "Active" to "Cancelled", "Completed" or "Terminated" under various circumstances. (Similarly, SEVIS will change the status of F-2 or M-2 dependents.)
DHS will be sending a formal memo to all schools in the near future that clarifies the mandatory timeframes for performing system updates pertaining to student enrollment. In general, however, it is in the best interest of your students and academic institution that all required updates be made as soon as possible. Accurate and current SEVIS information ensures that DHS will be able to correctly verify a student's standing and process any requested benefits.
