The following quiz is to provide guidance for U.S. persons traveling outside the U.S. with firearms and/or ammunition.

Are you traveling outside of the United States with a non-automatic firearm or ammunition?

Yes? Continue to Question 2.

No? You may travel unrestricted.

Question 2

The firearm(s) or ammunition:

Are the firearms or ammuntion: Will you be transporting a shotgun or shotgun shells? Will you be transporting a rifle, pistol, or ammunition?

Any combination of these three BUT not all three:

  • Are for your exclusive use.
  • Will remain under your exclusive ownership and will NOT be resold or transferred to another person.
  • Will be in your possession upon return to the U.S.

A license exemption likely does not apply therefore: An Export License is Required.

Transportation of a shotgun or shotgun shells requires:

Transportation of a rifle, pistol, or ammunition requires:

  • An export license from the U.S. Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls is required.
  • Anyone who falls into this category MUST file the electronic export information in AESDirect.

  • Will remain under your exclusive ownership and will NOT be resold or transferred to another person.
  • Will be in your possession upon return to the U.S.

Three or fewer firearms?

A license exemption likely applies therefore: An Export License is not required.

With less than three shotguns there is a license exception available.

  • Note that the barrel of the shotgun MUST be 18 inches or longer.
  • Anyone who falls into this category does NOT need to file an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.
  • Anyone who falls into this category does NOT need to file the electronic export information in AESDirect.
  • Prior to departing the U.S., you MUST verbally declare the items to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
  • Additional information can be found at the U.S. Department of Commerce's export regulations website.
