Dequan Deshawn Willard, 22, pleaded guilty in December 2016 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine base and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Brothers, William Emmanuel Spence, 27, Jasmine Jamal Spence, 28, and Antonio Deon Ray Montgomery, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base.

Jose Loza, 40, the lead defendant in a 2016 federal grand jury indictment charging 51 Canta Ranas members and associates, was convicted Thursday afternoon of 12 felonies. Canta Ranas is a multi-generational criminal enterprise engaged in murder, attempted murder, assault, extortion, money laundering, and drug distribution.

The lead defendant in a federal RICO indictment that was brought as part of the nation's largest-ever gang sweep was sentenced Monday to 30 years in federal prison for helping coordinate the racketeering activities of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens street gang and distributing large quantities of narcotics.

Detective John Saro Balian, 45, of Seal Beach, Calif., was taken into custody without incident at his residence. Balian, who is charged in a criminal complaint with making false statements to investigators during an interview last year, is expected to make his initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

A joint federal-state law enforcement operation Wednesday morning led to the arrest of 27 people linked to a Los Angeles-area street gang known as Lennox 13, some of whom are named in a federal racketeering indictment that alleges the gang is a criminal enterprise that has engaged in violent crimes, extortion and narcotics trafficking.

The lead defendant in the 35-count indictment is Jose Loza, who recently became a full-fledged member of the Mexican Mafia and is the “shotcaller” of the Canta Ranas gang. In addition to implementing D.G.’s orders, Loza allegedly executed another member of the Mexican Mafia who wanted to expand his influence and challenge D.G.’s authority over street gangs in the San Gabriel Valley.

Guillermo Ruiz, known on the street as “Weasel,” 42, of Bell Gardens, was sentenced to 160 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald. The case is the result of a large-scale investigation into Bell Gardens street gangs by special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
