A native of El Salvador, residing in Columbia, Md., was sentenced May 30 for illegally re-entering the United States after having been previously deported as the result of a felony conviction, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

Tayabi Fazal Hussain, 59, was convicted in June 2016, for violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He was charged with conspiracy to export sensitive U.S. technologies, including air filters, optical lenses, telescope equipment, mobile generators and mold detectors to Iran, without the requisite license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Mario Granados-Alvarado was released from local custody May 3 despite immigration officials formally lodging a detainer with the Montgomery County Detention Center a day earlier. Montgomery County, Maryland, is listed as a jurisdiction that has publicly limited cooperation with ICE and frequently ignores legally authorized detainers.

Operation Cross Check, which began May 18 and concluded Saturday, is the latest effort by ICE to prioritize the removal of criminal aliens and egregious immigration violators. Arrests were made in the following six states: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Kansas and Missouri. The 287 men and 10 women arrested are from 29 countries.

Carlos Ivan Rivas-Castro, 22, was removed to El Salvador Wednesday aboard a charter flight coordinated by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Air Operations Unit. Upon arrival, ERO officers turned the fugitive over to representatives from the Salvadoran national police and Interpol.

A former lawful permanent resident, who was once an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy, was deported Wednesday to Panama. He had killed two people during a 1977 hostage standoff at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The man was escorted from Buffalo, N.Y., to Panama by officers with ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
