Detainee passes away in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A 54-year-old Polish national passed away on June 16, 2010, at Providence Hospital Northeast in Columbia, S.C.

Kazimierz Holowienko had been in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Dec. 23, 2008, following his release from the Neuse Correctional Institute, a North Carolina Department of Corrections facility in Goldsboro, N.C. On Jan. 9, 2009, Holowienko was admitted to the Columbia Regional Care Center in South Carolina for long-term medical treatment of his liver disease. On June 12, 2010, he was admitted to Providence Hospital Northeast and passed away June 16 as a result of end stage liver disease.

Consistent with ICE protocol, the appropriate state health and local law enforcement agencies have been informed. ICE notified Polish consular officials and attempted to notify Holowienko's family, none of whom could be located.

Holowienko is the seventh detainee to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2010.
