Members of the Latin Kings gang in Newburgh, N.Y., were found guilty Wednesday of crimes committed during their association with the gang. Beginning in 2007, the Newburgh Latin Kings and their associates sold cocaine, crack heroin and marijuana at drug spots in Newburgh and protected the gang's drug turf, drugs and drug money using violence.

HSI’s El Salvador country team led an agenda focused on cross border collaboration and joint U.S./Salvadoran efforts on the ground that included the participation of the Salvadoran Attorney General, Douglas Melendez and the Director General of the Policia Nacional Civil, Howard Agusto Cotto.  The U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, Jean Manes, and other enforcement partners, participants discussed first-hand issues of gang-violence, insecurity, economic difficulties in El Salvador and their impact on the U.S., as well as our interagency team’s continued effort to confront those problems.

Hector Flamenco, 41, a citizen and national of El Salvador, entered the United States in August 1996. He has a felony conviction of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams, or more, of cocaine in the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York and received a sentence of 121 months imprisonment.

The jury convicted Felix Lopez-Cabrera, 24, Carlos Lopez, 26, and Luis Beltran 26 of charges arising out of their involvement from 2003 through 2012 in the criminal activities of the Bronx Trinitarios Gang (BTG). The BTG is a violent street gang that was involved in drug-trafficking and multiple acts of violence, including attempted murder, in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Yonkers.

Hector Aleman Lemos, the former leader of the Flushing, Queens, chapter of the violent international gang La Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, pleaded guilty Thursday to racketeering and murder conspiracy charges. This plea stems from an investigation by ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Yonkers (N.Y.) Police Department.

In recent court proceedings, defendants Milton Contreras and Jose Osmin Rubio pleaded guilty to murder of the 19-year-old victim, fellow gang member Sidney Valverde.  In the past month, two additional defendants, Byron Lopez and Oscar Welman Espinoza-Merino, had also pled guilty and admitted their participation in the murder.

A female MS-13 gang member wanted to face charges in El Salvador was arrested under Operation Matador in March, pursuant to an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations.  She was removed Nov. 16 to El Salvador by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

A total of 475 individuals were arrested during this ongoing enforcement effort, most of which were confirmed as gang members and affiliates. The most prominent gangs with arrests during this operation were MS-13 with 274 arrests and the 18th street gang with 15 arrests.  This operation yielded 227 total criminal arrests and 248 administrative arrests.

The indictment out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for SDNY charges Amilcar Romero, a/k/a “Soldado,” Jaime Santana, a/k/a “Smiley,” Jose Garcia, a/k/a “Tricky,” and Alexander Rivera, a/k/a “Extrano,” with racketeering conspiracy and narcotics distribution conspiracy.
