David Nguyen, 40, of Toronto, Canada, was sentenced and ordered to pay a fine of $10,000.  Nguyen had previously pleaded guilty in October 2016 to one count of conspiracy to distribute MDMA (aka ecstasy, or “mollie”) and marijuana and one count of money laundering conspiracy.

David Nguyen, 40, of Toronto, Canada, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute MDMA (aka “ecstasy” or “mollie”) and marijuana; and one count of conspiracy to launder money. Nguyen was indicted in January 2014, arrested in Canada in May 2014 and extradited to the United States in October 2016 after he temporarily surrendered to the United States.

Fourteen individuals were arrested as part of the operation, with two other suspects charged but still at large. The nearly 1,000 bags of heroin and 70 grams of cocaine base were seized by law enforcement after searches conducted on three residences and one hotel room in the area.

A Mexican national, Omar Quezada-Alcala, was sentenced Monday to 15 years eight months in prison for cocaine trafficking. This investigation was conducted by ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Quezada-Alcala admitted he was going to be paid to pick up a car and deliver it to an unknown location and that he had done it before.

Mercedes Perez, a former reserve officer for the Nueces County Constables Office, was sentenced Monday to 151 months for conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and heroin, as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin. Perez was found to have cocaine and heroin in his car at a U.S.- Mexico border crossing.

U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen sentenced Miguel Echevarria-Guizar, 22, from Mexico to 36 months in federal prison. His father Miguel Echevarria-Zuniga, 51, also from Mexico, was sentenced in August to serve 42 months for the marijuana charge and for re-entering the United States after having been deported.

Jorge Barrera, 33, from Garciasville, Texas, was sentenced Feb. 21 by U.S. District Rolando Olvera to 48 months in federal prison and to two years of supervised release.  Barrera pleaded guilty to the cocaine trafficking charges Nov. 16, 2017.

Alexander Ortega, 24, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Hilda G. Tagle to 360 months in prison for each of the four counts of conviction, which are to be served concurrently. In handing down the sentence, Judge Tagle noted the amount of drugs involved and Ortega's role as leader of the conspiracy. Ortega will also be required to serve five years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.
