Eduardo Hinojosa, aka “Lalo,” 49, a U.S. citizen residing in Piedra Negras, Mexico, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alia Moses March 28 to 78 months in federal prison. Judge Moses also ordered Hinojosa to pay a $3,000 fine and to be placed on supervised release for a period of three years after he completes his prison term.

Melquiades Garcia Gonzalez, 29, of Kent, was arrested May 20, 2014, when he attempted to deliver 3 kilograms of heroin to undercover officers in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Kent. When investigators moved in to make an arrest, Garcia Gonzalez fled in his vehicle at a high rate of speed, court records state.

Joseph T. Palermo, 33, of Oak Lawn, Illinois, imported anabolic steroids, human growth hormones and pharmaceuticals from outside the United States for about five years, according to a federal criminal complaint and affidavit. According to these charges, the shipments from China arrived in the form of raw liquid or powder, which Palermo manufactured into usable steroids and distributed to large-scale dealers in the Chicago area.

Investigators speculate the tunnel, when completed, would have connected with the drainage system which runs below the city and extends into Nogales, Sonora.

A search of the residences of both brothers resulted in seizing $162,795 in currency, about 160 packages of cocaine ready for distribution and five weapons.
