4-time deported Mexican man sentenced in Wisconsin to 15 months in federal prison for illegally re-entering US

MADISON, Wis. — A convicted felon from Mexico, who was previously deported four times, was sentenced Tuesday to 15 months in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States after having been deported.

This sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney John W. Vaudreuil, Western District of Wisconsin. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

Jesus Salazar-Martinez, 30, a Mexican national who was illegally residing in Baraboo, Wisconsin, was sentenced Sept. 13 by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 15 months in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States after having been deported.  Salazar-Martinez pleaded guilty to the charge June 10.

Salazar-Martinez has been deported to Mexico on four prior occasions after having been convicted of committing the following crimes in the United States: felony sexual assault (twice), DUI, and illegally re-entering the United States after having been deported.

Judge Conley imposed the 15-month sentence while cautioning Salazar-Martinez that future illegal re-entry sentences would likely be more severe.  Judge Conley also warned Salazar-Martinez that he was in danger of “doing life on the installment plan” if he continued returning to the United States.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea, Western District of Wisconsin, prosecuted this case.

Salazar-Martinez will again be deported to Mexico after he completes his prison sentence.
