ERO Los Angeles arrests foreign fugitive, alleged member of MS-13

LOS ANGELES – Officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Los Angeles field office arrested Edwing Edgardo Ramos-Alvarado, 39, a citizen of El Salvador subject to an arrest warrant issued in his home country for crimes of illicit association with the known criminal gang MS-13, Jan. 3.

Ramos-Alvarado entered the United States at an unknown date and location without being admitted or paroled by an immigration officer. The Specialized Examining Magistrates Court in San Salvador, El Salvador, issued an order of apprehension for Ramos-Alvarado, April 3, 2013. On March 15, 2017, Ramos-Alvarado was convicted by the Harris County Criminal Courts at Law, Houston, for driving while intoxicated and sentenced him to probation for 18 months.

United States Border Patrol (USBP) arrested Ramos-Alvarado, April 19, 2020, at the Sierra Blanca, Texas, checkpoint for an outstanding warrant. On the same day, the USBP turned Ramos-Alvarado over to the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). Ramos-Alvarado’s probation was revoked and he was sentenced to 30 days jail, April 30, 2020.

ERO Houston arrested Ramos-Alvarado, May 1, 2020, upon his release from the HCSO serving him with a Notice to Appear, pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act, as being unlawfully present in the U.S. An immigration judge ordered Ramos-Alvarado removed to El Salvador, Aug. 10, 2020, which was affirmed Feb. 10, 2021, following appeal. ERO Houston transferred the case to ERO Los Angeles alternatives to detention, May 5, 2021.

ERO Los Angeles officers arrested Ramos-Alvarado in Los Angeles, Jan. 3, serving him with a warrant of removal after validating the foreign arrest warrant with the ICE attaché in El Salvador.

“The U.S. will not be a refuge for those who actively attempt to evade responsibility in their home country,” said Thomas P. Giles, field office director of ERO Los Angeles. “ICE officers serve as skilled and persistent members of law enforcement, showing the cooperative work necessary to keep the international community safe.”

Ramos will remain in ERO custody pending removal to El Salvador.
