ERO Salt Lake City arrests 6 as part of nationwide operation

Criminal offenses include drug trafficking and possession

SALT LAKE CITY — Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Salt Lake City officers apprehended six unlawfully present noncitizens convicted of drug trafficking or possession offenses involving methamphetamine, fentanyl and heroin during a nationwide enforcement effort Jan. 23 through Feb. 6.

The effort included noncitizens with final orders of removal. Cases amenable to federal criminal prosecution may be presented to the appropriate U.S. attorney’s office.

“ICE officers are stopping the distribution of dangerous narcotics like methamphetamine and fentanyl by arresting and removing those poisoning the communities in Utah, Nevada and Idaho with these drugs,” said ERO Salt Lake City Field Office Director Michael Bernacke.

The following people are among those arrested:

  • A 61-year-old citizen of Mexico in Owyhee County, Idaho, arrested Jan. 24. The 3rd Judicial District Court, Owyhee County, State of Idaho, convicted them for the offense of possession of a methamphetamine, a felony, for which they were placed on supervised probation for a period of three years on Jan. 11, 2021.
  • A 35-year-old citizen of Honduras in Las Vegas, Nevada, arrested Jan. 25. In 2016, courts in Los Angeles and Las Vegas convicted this person of possession of methamphetamine resulting in jail time.
  • A 54-year-old citizen of Mexico in Salt Lake County arrested Jan. 31. In 2014, the Third District Court-West Jordan, Salt Lake County, State of Utah, convicted this person of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine resulting in jail time.

ICE targets and arrests noncitizens who have committed crimes and other individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws. ICE officers, informed by their experience and training, use their discretion inherent as law enforcement officials to focus enforcement resources on people who threaten the homeland.

In fiscal year 2022, ERO arrested 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories; this group had 198,498 associated charges and convictions. These included 21,531 assault offenses; 8,164 sex and sexual assault offenses; 5,554 weapons offenses; 1,501 homicide-related offenses; and 1,114 kidnapping offenses.
