Guatemalan man sentenced for illegally reentering US after 3 deportations
NEW ORLEANS – A Guatemalan man illegally present in the United States who has been deported from the country three times, and subsequently re-entered the country illegally, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison on a felony charge of illegal re-entry of a removed alien. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) investigated the case.
Hector Barrios-Patino, 37, a citizen of Guatemala, was sentenced to three years of supervised release in addition to the 21 months in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown of the Eastern District of Louisiana handed down the sentence.
“This case is an example of an individual that has no respect for our laws or our borders,” said Scott Sutterfield, acting field office director for ERO New Orleans. “ERO will continue looking for, and recommending prosecution of, anyone who illegally reenters the U.S.”
Barrios was taken into ICE custody Feb. 15 following his arrest by the Causeway Police Department for Driving While Intoxicated Feb. 5.
Barrios was previously removed from the United States by ICE in October 2003, July 2007 and July 2009. He subsequently illegally re-entered the country following each removal, which is a felony offense under federal law.
