HSI RGV, USBP secure the conviction of a Chinese national for possessing multiple child pornography videos

MCALLEN, Texas — A Chinese national was convicted Dec. 20 for transporting child sexual abuse material following an investigation worked by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with assistance from U.S. Border Patrol (USBP).

Tong Sun, 45, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis, who accepted his plea for possessing child sexual abuse material via his cell phone.

According to court documents, on or about May 8, Sun attempted to illegally enter the country in an area near Roma. Law enforcement took him into custody, at which time they discovered several videos that constituted child sexual abuse material on his phone. One of the videos depicted a child who appeared to be younger than 5 years of age. Sun admitted to ownership of the phone and to possessing the child sexual abuse material.

Alanis has set sentencing for March 25, 2024. At that time, Sun faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. He remains in custody pending sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cahal P. McColgan, Southern District of Texas, is prosecuting the case.
