ICE HSI investigated Colorado felon for illegally possessing firearms

DENVER – A Colorado felon was sentenced to serve nearly 7 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years on supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) joined United States Attorney Jason R. Dunn in making the announcement.

Jeffrey Mons Olson, 50, appeared at the hearing in custody and was remanded at its conclusion. Olson was a convicted felon being supervised by the Colorado Department of Adult Parole.

“Olson has a lengthy history that clearly demonstrates he has no regard for the law, as today’s sentence shows,” said Steven Cagen, special agent in charge, HSI Denver. “HSI and our law enforcement partners, working together, will investigate and ultimately bring to justice all those who seek to disregard our nation’s laws.”

“Mr. Olson wasn’t just a convicted felon with a gun. He had an arsenal of high-powered weapons and ammunition,” said U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn.  “He will now spend a long time in federal prison, and the community is safer for it.”

According to the stipulated facts contained in the plea agreement, on March 28, 2019, Parole officers were conducting surveillance on Olson as part of a criminal investigation. During the surveillance, parole officers observed Olson at a storage locker in Aurora. They later contacted Olson at his home where they searched his truck.

They located a loaded firearm between the driver’s seat and the center console. Officers also discovered a black duffle bag behind the driver’s seat with four additional firearms. Four of the five recovered firearms in the truck were loaded and previously reported stolen.

On March 29, 2019, investigators with HSI and the Denver Police Department went to the storage locker in Aurora, which had been rented by Olson’s wife. Law enforcement executed a search warrant at the locker where agents and officers seized nine additional firearms, including two semi-automatic rifles and seven handguns and various calibers of ammunition.

U.S. District Court Judge Raymond P. Moore pronounced Olson’s sentence on Nov. 10, 2020.  He was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver Sept. 5, 2019. He pleaded guilty Dec. 23, 2019. This case was investigated by HSI, the Colorado Department of Adult Parole and the Denver Police Department. The defendant was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Flanigan.
