ICE removes Indian man convicted of conspiracy to export sensitive US technologies to Iran

PHILADELPHIA — An Indian citizen was removed from the United States Jan. 18, by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Upon the man’s arrival in India, he was turned over to local authorities.

Tayabi Fazal Hussain, 59, was convicted in June 2016, for violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He was charged with conspiracy to export sensitive U.S. technologies, including air filters, optical lenses, telescope equipment, mobile generators and mold detectors to Iran, without the requisite license from the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison with credit for time served.

ERO Philadelphia officers encountered Hussain at the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, Nov. 14, 2016. On Dec. 19, 2016, an immigration judge ordered Hussain removed to India.

In fiscal year 2016, ICE conducted 240,255 removals nationwide. Ninety-two percent of individuals removed from the interior of the United States had previously been convicted of a criminal offense. ICE remains focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes threats to national security, public safety and border security.
