Wilmington port employee arrested on drug charges

PHILADELPHIA – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrested Tuesday a Wilmington, Delaware, port employee for federal drug possession and intent to distribute charges.

HSI special agents took Ronald Mays, 63, into custody to face three counts of attempted possession of cocaine and distribution charges for delivery to Delaware County, Pennsylvania on or about Jan. 6, 2014, Feb. 12, 2014, and May 6, 2014.

“Today’s arrest reflects the outstanding work our special agents are doing in concert with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to protect our nation’s ports of entries,” said John Kelleghan HSI Philadelphia special agent in charge. “We cannot allow those entrusted with special access to our ports violate the public’s trust and endanger our communities.”

If convicted the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of 60 years in prison, a maximum fine of $3 million, at least four years of supervised release, and a special assessment of $300.

An indictment is an accusation.  A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The case was investigated by HSI with assistance from CBP and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sozi Pedro Tulante.
