Cruz, a documented member of the Logan Heights gang, was residing unlawfully in the United States with his partner, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient who operates an in-home daycare.

Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, a 32-year-old citizen of Mexico in ICE custody, was pronounced dead by a doctor at the Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona, at 7:02 a.m. Mountain Standard Time on Aug. 31. The preliminary cause of death is unknown and remains under investigation.
