Josimar Badillo-Ortiz, 29, from Fort Worth, Texas, was sentenced Feb. 26 by U.S. District Judge John McBryde to 240 months in prison. Badillo-Ortiz’s two co-conspirators, Joel Gonzalez-Oviedo, 25, and Juan Carranza-Moreno, 31, both from Fort Worth, are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge McBryde March 25.

Ameri-Source International Inc., Ameri-Source Specialty Products Inc., Ameri-Source Holdings Inc., owned by Ajay Goel and Thomas Diener, and a related import company, SMC Machining LLC, incorporated at Goel’s direction and formerly owned by his wife, imported small-diameter graphite electrodes from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These devices are columns of synthetic graphite with diameters of around 16 inches or less which are used as fuel in electric arc and ladle furnaces, such as those used in steel manufacturing.

Four federal criminal complaints, partially unsealed Feb. 11, charge a total of 50 individuals with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and/or 500 grams or more of cocaine. Thirty-six of those defendants were arrested in the Feb. 10 operation, five were already in custody at various locations on unrelated state charges, and nine have not yet been arrested.

Robie Lynn Sims, 41, pleaded guilty in October 2015 to one count of concealing a person from arrest. On Feb. 8, U.S. District Judge Reed C. O’Connor ordered Sims to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons by March 18.

Nathan Bryant Cooper, 36, of Haltom City, Texas, has been in custody since his arrest in September 2015 on a related federal criminal complaint. He pleaded guilty in November 2015 to one count of conspiracy to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.

Victor Hugo Gonzalez, 36, of Laredo, was sentenced Jan. 22 by visiting U.S. District Judge Janis Graham Jack to 188 months in federal prison, which is to be immediately followed by five years’ supervised release. Gonzalez pleaded guilty to the charges Aug. 25, 2015.

Noel Pena, 29, of Rio Grande City, who had been assigned to the Starr County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force, and Hector Salinas-Hinojosa, 21, of Roma, Texas, were sentenced Jan. 21, by U.S. Chief Judge Ricardo Hinojosa. Judge Hinojosa ordered Pena to serve 84 months in federal prison, while Salinas will serve a 60-month term.
