Knowledge such as this can be useful during routine side-of-the-road stops as well as in a targeted smuggling operation.

According to the first indictment, between Feb. 1 and July 21, Christopher Martinez Sr., 45; Randy Seja, 24; Felix Gago, 40; and Christopher Martinez Jr., 23, conspired to possess and distribute methamphetamine. In the second indictment, Gilberto Zarate, 34; Jorge Calestino Alvarez-Arias, 27; Marco Mosqueda, 27; Frances Reyna, 55; Gabriel Galvan, 27; Rafael Delatorre, 32; Jose Delatorre, 22; Alfonso Esparza, 38; and Gabriel Esparza, 37, are charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute methamphetamine; possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine; and distribution of  methamphetamine. Zarate, along with Alfonso Esparza and Gabriel Esparza, are also charged with being felons in possession of firearms. The third indictment adds defendant Cecilio Alaniz, 26, and Christopher Valdez, 35, to an indictment that originally charged Jesse Mendoza, 36, and Roxana Dodier, 23.

Marciano Millan Vasquez (aka “Chano”), 33, was convicted after a two-week trial. A federal jury convicted him on multiple drug trafficking charges, weapons charges, making a false statement to a federal official and killing while engaged in drug trafficking.

Jae Seon Yoon, 56, was convicted for his role in a scheme to import and distribute drug paraphernalia and other goods with counterfeit markings that made them appear to be from established suppliers. Yoon was the president or vice-president of multiple companies that did business in Washington over the years, including J&J, Inc., Smomax, Inc., and Three People Corp., which were doing business as Top Wholesale, Inc., Smomax Inc. and Cigar USA, respectively.

Juan Manuel Vargas-Aguilar, aka “Chacalilla,” 46, of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, previously pleaded guilty for his role in two separate drug conspiracies. U.S. District Marina Garcia Marmolejo sentenced Vargas-Aguilar June 2 for a conspiracy spanning June 10, 2011 to June 4, 2013, and for a second conspiracy that occurred Oct. 4, 2014.

Thomas Jaime Orozco, 35, was previously convicted of serving as the leader of a methamphetamine distribution ring based in San Joaquin County. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Beck with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

Sergio Linyuntang Mendoza Bohon, 19, was arrested in February after he attempted to smuggle nearly 1,200 counterfeit oxycodone pills into the U.S. through the pedestrian lane at the Otay Mesa port of entry. During a secondary inspection and pat down, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found the tablets along with a package containing several grams of white powder in Mendoza’s underwear.

Gilbert Lee Medina, 52, was sentenced by Senior District Judge Helen Gillmor. Medina was convicted by a jury last year of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Medina’s two prior drug felony convictions in California made imposition of the life sentence mandatory. There is no parole under current federal criminal law.

According to the criminal complaint, Ehbrin Castro-Correa arrived March 4 at the Pan-American Dock in a pickup truck with several dogs inside crates. At approximately 5:45 p.m., HSI special agents observed he placed six crates, each containing a dog, in the luggage drop off area before he presented his boarding pass to board the Caribbean Fantasy Ferry.
