According to the indictment and other court records, two citizens of Guatemala — Ronaldo Galindo Lopez-Escobar aka Tio Roni, 45, of Guatemala City, Guatemala, and his sister, Rosa Adriana Lopez-Escobar aka Tia Rosa, 38, of Phoenix — allegedly led the Lopez crime family, a transnational criminal organization principally involved in human smuggling with operations in Guatemala, Mexico and the United States.

HSI New York Special Agent in Charge Ivan J. Arvelo and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams announced June 22 that the United States filed and settled a civil forfeiture action against $12 million derived from the sale of stolen Southeast Asian antiquities by indicted antiquities dealer Douglas Latchford.

On June 23, U.S. District Judge Greg Kays sentenced Michael Brandon Pedrino to 160 months of incarceration to be followed by five years of supervised release as part of a plea agreement related to drug distribution and firearm possession.

A joint investigation involving HSI Baltimore landed a Salvadoran national 26 years in federal prison for his role in a racketeering conspiracy that included murder, drug distribution and firearms charges. Jose Lopez-Rivera, 27, of Elmont, New York, received the lengthy prison sentence May 31 at the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland in Baltimore.

The operation took place June 5 through June 9 and resulted in hundreds of arrests, as well as gun and drug seizures. Officials made more than 580 arrests, over 420 of which were for felonies. They also seized nearly 520,000 fentanyl pills and more than 5 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as over 40 weapons from prohibited possessors.

The man is an unlawfully present Mexican national who was convicted in April 2019 by the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and sentenced to six years in the Illinois DOC. He was later paroled in April to complete his sentence on electronic monitoring.
